Try These Alternative Protein Sources

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

Our chiropractors in Chicago know that even meat lovers can use a break from meat products once in a while! Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan or simply trying to expand your palette, there are plenty of different meat and protein alternatives on the market right now. Try incorporating the following into your diet, and you could find something that you love.

Tempeh

Tempeh is an Indonesian soy product that is extremely versatile. It takes on the seasoning or the flavoring that you give it, making it the perfect alternative to chicken. It is a soy-based product made from fermenting cooked soybeans and forming it together into a patty. Tempeh can easily be incorporated into your breakfast, lunch or dinner, and it has a delicious nutty flavor!

Seitan

Seitan is also referred to as wheat gluten, and it has been used as a meat alternative for over 1,000 years. It was traditionally made from rinsing and cooking wheat dough to remove the starch. As a result, there was a protein-based substance that many people still use to this day! You can buy pre-made seitan at the grocery store.

Quinoa

Although quinoa has been around for a long time, it has only recently gained popularity in the last decade. It is a grain that is high in protein, dietary fiber, B vitamins and other dietary minerals. Plus, it is gluten-free, making it ideal for many dietary restrictions.

Other alternative protein sources include chickpeas, hemp, lentil, chia seeds and almonds.

At Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Injury Centers, our team takes pride in offering a wide range of services, including nutrition help!  What is your favorite protein source?
