Natural Headache Remedies

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

For many, headaches are a daily occurrence that have a huge impact on the quality of life. While some headaches are tolerable, some are unbearable, causing sufferers to stay in bed because of the extreme pain. There are many medications that focus on headache relief, but they are not guaranteed to work. Our Chicago chiropractor recommend the following natural remedies to help find much-needed relief.

Water, Water, Water

Did you know that chronic dehydration is the cause of many headaches? If you are suffering from a headache, try drinking a large glass of water; symptoms should hopefully subside within 30 minutes to three hours. You can also eat water-rich foods to ensure you are getting enough.

Take a B-Complex Vitamin

B vitamins are water-soluble micronutrients that are responsible for many different functions in the body, including helping turn food into energy. Some B vitamins can help protect against headaches, and they are safe to take on a regular basis.

Use a Cold Compress

Take a cold washcloth or a small bag of ice and put it on either the back of your neck or on your forehead to help reduce the pain you are feeling. It helps decrease inflammation and slow nerve conduction and the constricting of blood vessels, all which play a role in headaches.

Try Acupuncture

Our chiropractors in Chicago have seen firsthand the benefits that acupuncture has to offer for headache sufferers. In 22 different studies, over 4,400 people found acupuncture to be as effective as common migraine medications. The thin needles stimulate specific points on the body to help provide relief.
